i recently discovered this new girl group: Say Now and i'm OBSESSED. it's composed of Amelia Onuorah and Madeleine Haynes, both 23, and 22-year-old Ysabelle Salvanera. they're british and i love their new concept because they really incorporate their origins into their looks and overall aesthetic. they wear short dresses with floral patterns, big blowouts and little tiaras, like princesses of london.
they're soo cool, their voices are so majestic, and i just love their songs. they remind me of little mix in their new 2010s era. and it's so nostalgic, i love that! i feel like a little girl again, listening to little mix on my mp3 and dancing in my room.
their latest single is "Hot & Talking", and we can clearly hear the little electro and pop beats that are so characteristic of 2010s music. and on top of that, it was co-produced by PinkPantheress!! and we can really hear her influence throughout the melody.
i'm so hyped for their EP on november 13th!!
and in general, we can notice that girl groups are really popular right now.
indeed, one of the other big examples of recent british girl groups is FLO. i also loveee them, ever since their debut in 2022 with their single "Cardboard Box". i got to see them in Paris at the Olympia last year and i'm still not over it. their songs are, i think, more 2000s R&B, like Destiny's Child or TLC.
but actually, they're all inspired and influenced by past groups like the Spice Girls or even the Pussycat Dolls. indeed, 2000s groups paved the way for 2010s groups and then... radio silence. western girl groups just slowly fell apart. they disbanded, members left, etc.
but today they're back! and i think it can be explained by the democratisation of K-pop. i think that now everyone knows what it is and has already heard a song from this huge industry. groups like BLACKPINK or TWICE are now reaching the american music industry and collaborating with it.
other groups like F5VE are also emerging. they're from Japan and they're trying to reach a wider audience beyond Asia. their songs are driven by very electronic and pop beats. they're a perfect example of collaborations with other western groups and of breaking away from the "K-pop" label.
this emergence has led to projects like KATSEYE, a group formed through auditions, judges and votes. it doesn't always work that well, but we can't deny that girl groups are literally taking over our time! and that's sooo cool because we can also have our own representation of girls through music, just like we had back in the 2000s!
omg f5ve mentioned!!!!
