girls groups are sooo back

i recently discovered this new girl group: Say Now and i'm OBSESSED. it's composed of Amelia Onuorah and Madeleine Haynes, both 23, and 22-year-old Ysabelle Salvanera. they're british and i love their new concept because they really incorporate their origins into their looks and overall aesthetic. they wear short dresses with floral patterns, big blowouts and little tiaras, like princesses of london.

they're soo cool, their voices are so majestic, and i just love their songs. they remind me of little mix in their new 2010s era. and it's so nostalgic, i love that! i feel like a little girl again, listening to little mix on my mp3 and dancing in my room.

their latest single is "Hot & Talking", and we can clearly hear the little electro and pop beats that are so characteristic of 2010s music. and on top of that, it was co-produced by PinkPantheress!! and we can really hear her influence throughout the melody.

i'm so hyped for their EP on november 13th!!

and in general, we can notice that girl groups are really popular right now.

indeed, one of the other big examples of recent british girl groups is FLO. i also loveee them, ever since their debut in 2022 with their single "Cardboard Box". i got to see them in Paris at the Olympia last year and i'm still not over it. their songs are, i think, more 2000s R&B, like Destiny's Child or TLC.
but actually, they're all inspired and influenced by past groups like the Spice Girls or even the Pussycat Dolls. indeed, 2000s groups paved the way for 2010s groups and then... radio silence. western girl groups just slowly fell apart. they disbanded, members left, etc.

but today they're back! and i think it can be explained by the democratisation of K-pop. i think that now everyone knows what it is and has already heard a song from this huge industry. groups like BLACKPINK or TWICE are now reaching the american music industry and collaborating with it.

other groups like F5VE are also emerging. they're from Japan and they're trying to reach a wider audience beyond Asia. their songs are driven by very electronic and pop beats. they're a perfect example of collaborations with other western groups and of breaking away from the "K-pop" label.

this emergence has led to projects like KATSEYE, a group formed through auditions, judges and votes. it doesn't always work that well, but we can't deny that girl groups are literally taking over our time! and that's sooo cool because we can also have our own representation of girls through music, just like we had back in the 2000s!

thank you guys for reading! xoxo

WpointM

lately one of my favourite french rappers has released a new album!! his name is Tiakola, also known as one of the best "mélomane"of his generation! he actually comes from a group named 4keus and started a solo career when it disbanded.

his first album was really incredible! it was the first time we heard him on his own, and the first time we could actually hear him for who he is. we could clearly understand his world and influences, and that's what i liked. the way he plays with so many genres and melodies. we usually call him a rapper, but he offers a new subgenre: something with gospel, trap, rap and afro influences all at the same time, blending music from the African continent with the way it has been reused and reinterpreted by the diaspora in France. the kind of music we all listened to back in the days on some cool channels like Trace Africa or in the car with your dad. a mix that creates really danceable and sometimes melancholic songs. that's also what i love, because the feelings can be completely different thanks to this very diverse palette.

and that's what we hear in this new album. but in a different way. because even if we recognise his personality and his "touch", something new is present. and we understand why when we learn more about his artistic process and the way he built this project. he said that this album is like a summary of his life.

since the group disbanded, his past projects, his new independent label, etc. so the themes explored are very diverse and "human". i heard someone use this word in a review of one of the songs on the album : Sans toi. indeed, in this song we really get to see a sort of vulnerable side of him. he talks about some pretty intimate subjects, like the fact that he feels lonely, that the music industry has really changed his relationships with people, etc. it's something really interesting because it is also why so many people love him and recognise themselves through him : he is "un enfant de Bondy". it's a town in the Parisian suburbs, in the 93, and people from the banlieue know and always understand what he is referring to in his songs. that's why we get access to the person behind the music and not only the singer. we already had a glimpse of this during his last projects, but now there is maybe a more mature aspect to it.

this song is, i think, the one that perfectly sums up this new project. we really take a look back at his life, and we have direct references to his influences: Congolese music like rumba and the singers he mentions, but also US rap like Jay-Z and Biggie. but he also really makes a connection with his origins through the use of and references to his country of origin : CONGO.

he said that he recently went there for the first time, and he rediscovered his culture. as a child of immigrants, i also feel close to this experience and this feeling of reconnecting with your roots and discovering something new. it's something i think is very inspiring. and i particularly love the song Caméléon, because it literally means "chameleon". the music video was shot in Congo, and its sounds are similar to Congolese rumba. i interpret this song as a sort of feeling of being a foreigner in France, but now being "chez [lui]" in Congo. he feels at home there and doesn't have to pretend or change because of an unfamiliar environment. it's something we can all experience when we are children of immigrants, even if we live and were born in France. anyways, apart from this beautiful message, i just love this song, it's my favourite on the album!

he teased the first song in june, and we all thought we would get the album next, but he released it in september. as a consolation, the song was incredible, with a clear message: "avant la trap dans nos tieks y'vait le coupé décalé". in this way, he reaffirms the afro heritage behind an entire genre of music that was influenced by and made possible thanks to coupé-décalé (a type of popular dance music originating in Côte d'Ivoire and popularised in Paris in the early 2000s. it's a very percussive style, featuring African samples, deep bass and repetitive minimalist arrangements.) or logobi (an Ivorian musical genre that accompanies certain dance moves. it first appeared in Côte d'Ivoire in 1980.), for example, which we can hear in his songs. and he adds this:

"BIG UP à Djoban Djo, Mokobe, Kaysha, Ordinateur, Zota, Babyprod, Dawala, Ahmed Chala !!
MONETISEZ LES CLIPS DES ARTISTES D'AFRIQUE FRANCOPHONE !"

these are the names of African artists, and he's saying that music videos by French-speaking African artists should be monetised.

to conclude, i want to say that it is a very inspiring and melancholic project. thank you Tiakola for representing all the banlieusards so well and for knowing how to connect with us through your songs.

the last thing i want to share is my FAV song of his. it's not part of this project but really, it's the one that made me love his music and got me interested in his artistic personality in the first place.

"In 2026, the police are maiming high school students"

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. - John F. Kennedy
